Receding Gums: Are dental implants still an option?

Posted on 6/16/2012 by Dr. Franco
Image of implants for receding gums in Irving,TXDental implants have become a popular method of replacing missing teeth in recent times. Not only do they look like natural, healthy teeth; they are also a much more long-lasting solution that requires no additional care, save for that which is afforded the patient’s remaining teeth, and help strengthen and restore a person’s bite back to almost full effectiveness.

For anyone considering dental implants as a means to replace their lost teeth, it is important to consult an implant dentist who will perform an examination of the patient’s mouth in order to gauge the patient’s candidacy for treatment.

Although dental implant treatment has few factors that will prohibit a patient from enjoying the benefits of the treatment, there are still some occasions where dental implants may not be possible, or require additional treatment before implants can be performed.

Receding gums is one of a number of causes of tooth loss; often a sign of gum disease, receding gums indicates a loss of bone mass in the affected area that requires implants. Dental implants require a good amount of bone mass in order to properly support the titanium pillar used in implant treatment, but even though a patient may be suffering from receding gums, and therefore the likelihood of reduced bone mass, they can still benefit.

For patients who may have insufficient bone mass, an implant dentist is able to graft bone from elsewhere into the affected area, helping to promote new bone growth and so restore the bone mass required to house the implant.

Receding gums will, however, also require to be reversed in order to ensure the success of dental implants, and so additional treatment, such as tissue grafts to help rebuild lost gum tissue may also be needed.

Today’s advancements in dental reconstructive surgery means that patients who have insufficient gum tissue, bone mass or even both, needn’t be excluded from having their smile restored through the use of dental implants.
