How Long Do Implants Last?

Posted on 11/1/2017 by Dr. Franco
Dental implants are ever-growing as they become more technologically advanced and more available to our patients. There is lots of different information out there on what kind to get, when to get them, and why to get them. Here at BiteLock, we want you to be as informed as possible so that you know you are making the right choice. Dr. Pedro Franco can help you every step of the way so that you know you are in great hands and can be confident in your smile for a long time to come.

What are Dental Implants?

When you are missing teeth, you may find that you are struggling with a wide variety of issues, and there could be even more on the way. For starters, you could be dealing with bone loss, gum disease, or decay of the surrounding teeth. Over time, the other teeth may start shifting and eventually you can lose more teeth because of the bone loss. Finding a solution (and doing so promptly) can mean a lot to your oral health. One way to fill in this gap is a dental implant. This is an appliance that is surgically installed under the surface of your jaw bone to act as the “root” to a false tooth. This is made of titanium, and it allows you a wide range of permanent options, from crowns to bridges and dentures. These are a great way to look and feel your best.

How Long Do They Last?

Often, we find that our patients are most concerned with the lifespan of their new teeth and implants. There are several factors to look at when determining this. When you get an implant, this is not the tooth itself that sits within your mouth. That is called an abutment. For the sake of this information, we will imagine that you are getting a crown, which is a single false tooth secured to the top of your implant.

If you take excellent care of your mouth, brushing and flossing as you are supposed to and using mouthwash properly, this crown can last an average of ten to fifteen years before it wears down or sustains enough damage to warrant being replaced. However, the implant itself lies beneath the gums’ surface. It fuses to the bone and is unaffected by daily use. This means, barring oral trauma or severe infection of some kind, this implant can last you for the rest of your life.

Dr. Pedro Franco knows implants inside and out, and we can help you to come up with a great oral hygiene regimen that will get you the most out of your false teeth and your implants. Once this surgery is complete, you should be set for life! If you have any concerns about a loose implant years down the line, it is essential that you call us straight away to make sure everything is all right down under the gums.
