The Danger of Only Ever Eating a Soft Diet

Posted on 6/13/2018 by Dr. Franco
Soft Diet BiteLock TX 75062-5650We recommend that you eat soft foods immediately following any type of oral surgery we perform. This is to help the area heal and to help prevent unnecessary damage to the site.

However, once your mouth begins to feel better, we do not want you sticking to only soft foods unless we specifically tell you to do so. This is not good for your teeth, and can actually harm your overall oral health. Soft food some of the time is fine, but that should not be the only texture you eat.

Soft Foods Do Not Challenge Your Jaw

Your jaw needs a workout to stay in good shape, just like the rest of your body. Your teeth push into the jaw to show the bone that it needs to stay strong. Each time you chew, there are tiny bits of damage caused around the root of your tooth. This is good, as it sends different cells from around your body to those areas to help rebuild them, keeping them strong.

The damage is incredibly minor, but it is a very important function in keeping healthy, strong teeth. When you only eat soft foods, this does not happen. Your jaw begins to think it does not need to be as strong, so your cells focus their attention elsewhere. This can cause your jaw to get softer and even lead to tooth loss if it goes on too long.

While it is important to eat soft foods when your mouth is healing, it should not be all you ever eat. What we want you to do is eat a wide variety of healthy foods, including proteins, vegetables, fruits, carbs, and some fats to make sure your teeth, along with the rest of you, stay healthy.
