Some Bleeding Following Oral Surgery is Normal and Expected

Posted on 8/25/2018 by Dr. Franco
Some Bleeding Following Oral Surgery is Normal and ExpectedWhen you have oral surgery, it is normal and expected to have some bleeding. We will ask you to place a piece of dry gauze on the socket and bite down to stop the bleeding. You must continue to do so for the next few hours after the surgery.

It is normal to have some bleeding after oral surgery. The gauze should have a light red stain during the first hours after the procedure and should be replaced frequently once you are home. We will send you home with a pack of gauze to use throughout the day. Blood should not be gushing out of the site, but if you have this experience you should call us right away.

How to Control Bleeding After Oral Surgery?

Follow all our instructions for your post-operative care precisely and call us if you have any concerns. Most patients experience bleeding that diminishes during the first 36-hours. Here are some additional things you can do to control or stop bleeding from the site:

•  Fold a piece of gauze into a square that fits over the socket and bite firmly on it for as long as you can tolerate it. When the gauze is soaked with blood or too wet from saliva, replaced it with a new piece.
•  Use a tea bag. Tea contains tannic acid, which helps in forming blood clots necessary to heal the gums.
•  Make sure a blood clot forms in the socket and don't do anything to disrupt it.
•  Sleep with your head elevated.
•  Avoid physical activities for the first two days following surgery.
•  Do not drink from a straw to avoid suction.

Some bleeding and swelling is normal and expected after any oral surgery. While these tips will help you feel better and start on the road to recovery, call us if you have any concerns about bleeding. Our surgeon or someone on our staff will check up on you later in the day or the following day to see how you are doing.
